Quotes

Here, I expect to post some of my favorite quotes that I run across in the news, in the course of my schooling, etc. Some will be serious, and some will be humorous.

Serious:
“All men by nature desire to understand.” — Aristotle, Metaphysics

“Heav’n and earth may fade and flee, firstborn light in gloom decline; but while God and I shall be, I am His, and He is mine.” — George Robinson, “I am His, and He is Mine”

“Come, Mr. Frodo!” he cried. “I can’t carry it for you, but I can carry you and it as well.” — Sam Gamgee, Lord of the Rings

“Whatever you want to be in life, you’re training for it now.” — Mike Anderson, STS-107

“The sufficiency of my merit is to know that my merit is insufficient.” — Augustine

“If you would be pungent, be brief; for it is with words as with sunbeams—the more they are condensed, the deeper they burn.” — Robert Southey (English Romantic poet)

Humorous:
“For a moment, victory was within the Jets’ grasp. And then the game began.” — a commenter on Yahoo News after the Patriots beat the Jets 49-19 several years ago

“Do be quiet!” said Lorin. “Poetry is not your forte, my friend. I see I’ll have to address you in prose. Listen, we may be nice polite National Guards, but we’re still children of Paris: when someone really gets our goat, we come down hard.” — Lorin, The Knight of Maison-Rouge

“Those evileyed-blackhanded-bowlegged-flint-hearted-clawfingered-foulbellied-bloodthirsty . . .” — Treebeard, about orcs, The Lord of the Rings
